Heraclitus Writing Assignment
Sep 23 @ 3:25 pm – 4:25 pm

Dear Class,

In an essay of about 700 words (c. three pages), please synthesize our discussion of Heraclitus from the past several days. In particular, what rhetorical devices does he use, and furthermore, how does he use these devices to express his philosophical ideas? What specific literary elements do you see in the fragments (such as metaphor, symbolism, plays on words, and ambiguity)? Cite specific examples, and explain how Heraclitus’ expression in language is representative of the content of his philosophical perspective (that is, his ideas about the universal flux of the cosmos, the harmony of opposites, and, above all, the Logos).

Use this link for a list of all his extant fragments.

Dear Class,

In a well-structured, five paragraph essay, please explore the characterization of Euthyphro’s personality.  What characteristics define who he is, and most importantly, how does Plato reveal these characteristics to us in the dialogue?  Be sure to back up your assertions with quotations from the text.

Length is not the priority here, but thoroughness and development.
